NTUC Anti-Austerity Bus
The TUC is planning an anti-austerity drive in the last two weeks of June. They will be sending a bus around the country to highlight the damage cuts are doing to individuals, their families and communities. The focus will be on ‘austerity uncovered’ – highlighting the cuts and making it a big media event. It is planned that the bus will visit Northampton and Corby on the 25th June – probably Northampton in the morning and over lunch, but that will depend on local activities. The TUC Women’s Committee is planning some sort of event/presentation around midday, based around the bus.
The idea is that local communities have an opportunity to present damage of the cuts they face, right around the areas the bus visits. The bus will be a double decker which is fully ‘branded’ and has an exhibitions inside it. It is hoped that a varying mixture of TUC staff, general
secretaries, regional and local trade unionists etc will travel with the bus. There will also be a film maker who is making a documentary and it is hoped local journalists will come too.
Some possible ideas might be visiting a Job Centre to talk to claimants, interviewing small business leaders about problems with funding from banks, a meeting on a local estate about bedroom tax and housing benefit cuts, visiting the hospital or library etc.
What we need from people is ideas about what we could do. Any campaigning organisation against cuts and austerity is welcome to come up with ideas.

For example the bus could visit Spring Boroughs and hold a combined housing benefit/bedroom tax/disability demo or public meeting. We could visit a community centre and talk to pensioners. It would be good to also have the bus in Abington St at some stage near the library for an event about cuts to library services.
Please could people have a think and contact Ron, Pat or myself (Sarah). We need to get ideas firmed up fairly urgently. Everyone – please put that date in your diary – it is a work day for many of you, but if you can, please consider how you might support events.
